Can’t be bothered to have a ten step skincare routine full of unnecessary products? Looking after our skin at any age is vital, but it becomes even more important when you notice your skin aging, whether that’s at 30 or 50 plus.

With so many products out there, it can be difficult to find the best skincare for aging skin, let alone know how to use it. If there’s one thing you should be doing as you mature is looking after your skin. Even more difficult than learning how to look after aging skin is dealing with dry skin on top of that.

This is where it gets good.

I’m going to be taking you through what you should be including as part of your skincare routine to deal with dry, aging skin. If your favorite products just aren’t working now is the time for a change. Starting with the best facial cleanser for aging skin.

I will give you my favorite tips on how to care for your mature skin properly. Having the right skincare routine is a gamechanger, especially since dry skin will show signs of aging much sooner than other skin types. Not only that, but dry, dehydrated skin can actually make wrinkles and sagging even worse. That’s where I come in.

Right, let’s get into it!

What is the best skincare routine for dry sensitive mature skin?

Having a skincare routine will help to diminish signs of aging and reduce how pronounced wrinkles are. When your skin is dry, its a sign that your skin barrier is damaged and is allowing moisture out, and is open for irritants. That can lead to sensitive skin, and none of us want that!

If your skin is dry and you have mature skin, then you need anti-aging products and skincare that help you to repair the skin barrier to restore hydration. It’s also a good idea to avoid irritants that could sensitize your skin and irritate it further, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Here are the essential things you need to have in a skincare routine for mature skin:

  • Include a cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer
  • Include a hydrating sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful UV rays
  • Use anti aging products to remove dead skin cells
  • Include ingredients such as collagen, vitamin c, peptides and reitnol to keep your skin fresh and youthful


Look out for key ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (HA) as it is ideal for dry skin. HA can hold over 1000 times its molecular weight in water, helping your skin to hold onto moisture and not dry out. Make sure you apply a HA product on wet skin or with a spritz of water for the best results.

So, let me take you through the skincare routine for mature dry skin that will help you keep wrinkles at bay and give you a youthful glow.

Mature skin care routine

Here are the essential steps you need to include in your anti aging routine.

Step 1 Cleanse

Before you can apply any products to your skin, you need to prep your skin and get rid of any dirt and bacteria. Ideally, you should be cleansing both in the morning and evening using a hydrating cream cleanser. This will help to not strip away moisture and hydrate the skin at the same time. A gentle cleanser is key.

Use lukewarm water to wash your face, not hot water as it may irritate your skin. Then grab a face towel and pat your face dry, don’t rub your face as this can cause more wrinkles.

Look out for- a cleanser with no foam or lather, that is just a gentle cleansing lotion. Ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate are very harsh and will break down the protective barrier of the skin, so stay away from this!

Some of my favorite cleansers include La Roche Posay and CeraVe.

Step 2 Use a Toner

A hydrating toner can help to rebalance the skin’s ph and also replenish moisture. It’s a good extra step to finish off the cleansing and prepping. Apply the hydrating toner with a cotton pad and smooth over your skin, no need to rinse.

Look out for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, but make sure to avoid SD alcohol 40, denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and ethanol. These can dry your skin out further.

One of my favorites is The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toner.

Step 3 Choose a Serum

Having a serum can make a big difference to your skin. It’s a good way of getting active ingredients straight into the skin, and targeting specific skin problems too. Serums are a water based or oil based product that has active ingredients in them. They absorb into the deeper layers of the skin to nourish it.

Look out for serums that contain antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin E to help your skin heal the barrier. It’s also a good idea to include a Hyaluronic Acid serum and others such as peptides and especially a retinol serum. If you have multiple serums, don’t use them all in one go, but rather choose one or two max for your routine, and switch them up in the morning or evening to include others.

The Ordinary and La Roche Posay have very good serums to choose from.

Step 4 Facial Oil (Optional)

You can choose to use a facial oil if you have dry skin, as it helps to seal in moisture and prevent your skin from during out. Using a pure plant oil that contains essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and lipids which constitute to a healthy skin barrier.

Oils are applied to the skin and smoothed in so the skin can absorb the nutrients. It is important you choose a pure, fragrance free oil to help your skin get all the good stuff with no irritants.

Oils high in oleic acid are better for dry skin types, either added to your moisturizer or before. You can choose to skip this step if you have oily skin.

Step 5 Moisturizer

This step is crucial for all skin types, but especially for mature aging skin. Apply moisturizer two times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. It should be the final step in your skincare routine. Using it in the morning will help to nourish and protect your skin, and in the evening it will help to protect the skin barrier and trap moisture.

Look out for ceramides and hylauronic acid in moisturizers to help protect the skin. Dry skin types need emollients in the ingredients such as glycerin, HA, plant butters and oils as well as ceramides.

You can find oil based moisturizer with camellia oil, olive oil and even argan oil. If you prefer quick absorbing moisturizers then go for a water based cream, and a richer night cream for the evening.

I personally use CeraVe moisturizing lotion for everyday hydration.

Step 6 Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the best thing you can do for aging skin. Many people experience premature aging and wrinkles due to photoaging, such as sun damage. Its key to use sunscreen every single day to protect your skin, rain or shine.

Look out for mineral sunscreen or physical sunscreen containing natural ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide rather than a chemical sunscreen that can irritate the skin. You can even use a SPF moisturizer to combine two products in one. Ideally, you should be getting a minimum of SPF 30 for your skin and hands. To avoid the white cast, go for a tinted sunscreen.

The best anti-aging treatments for aging skin

If you want a smooth, youthful complexion, there are a few key products and ingredients that are key to a skincare routine for mature dry skin with medical grade skincare.

Use a Retinol

Including a retinol in your night skincare routine can be a gamechanger. Of course,e to get the best results its preferable to use a small concentration first, and only once or twice a week to build up to it. Using it in place of your serum can be a good way of boosting cell turnover and renewing your skin.

Another thing I recommend is exfoliating, but of course not on the same day as using retinol.

Use Chemical Exfoliation

I’m not talking about using a face scrub, but gentle acids that help to exfoliate your skin, get rid of dead skin cells, and reveal fresh skin underneath. When you don’t exfoliate, your skin can look dull and clogged. Dry skin especially can have a build up of dead skin cells that removes the glow you should have.

Rather than using physical exfoliation such as scrub for your face, I recommend using an acid such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid for breakout prone skin. For dry skin, lactic acid or fruit enzymes such as aha’s and bha’s or alpha hydroxy acids. Don’t forget to moisturize after exfoliating. Exfoliating your skin should be done once or twice a week.

Use a facial Mask

Using a pure clay mask is a natural way of cleansing and exfoliating your skin and boosting your skin with essential minerals. Don’t leave masks on too long if you have dry skin, and pay attention to the ones that have hydrating ingredients.

Once or twice a week, when you aren’t doing a chemical peel, you can do a clay masks. Remember to rinse it off before it gets completely dry.

Use anti aging ingredients

When shopping for skincare, if you want products that truly treat your skin and produce long lasting results, then there are a few ingredients you should look out for.

Retinoids- Also known as Vitamin A derivatives, they promote cell turnover, stimulate collagen production and even out skin tone. This active ingredient is perfect for anti aging skincare

Antioxidants- This is vitamin C and E, which help to fight free radicals and protect your skin from the environment and sun damage. Find an antioxidant rich vitamin serum for your skincare routine.

Hyaluronic acid and ceramides-Using ingredients like these and glycerin or jojoba oil will be key in reducing fine lines and restoring the skin’s natural oils. This is going to help nourish your skin from the effects of anti-aging skincare, but also prevent wrinkles from forming from dehydrated skin. It hydrates skin!

Peptides- They help to nourish and repair skin damage, and are essential in any skincare regimen.

Of course, try to avoid harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulfate, and drying alcohols such as isopropyl alcohol to avoid irritating or drying your skin out.r skin’s protective barrier

Final Thoughts

Taking care of your skin requires a morning routine and an evening routine with essential nutrients. As we get older, we get collagen breakdown and may get signs of aging. Unless you’re a makeup artist, its pretty hard to hide deep wrinkles and other visible signs of aging.

To keep your skin firm, you need to include a hydrating cleanser, gentle exfoliation such as lactic acid, a few drops of a hydrating serum such as hyaluronic acid to retain moisture, and a hydrating moisturizer. This makes up the perfect anti aging routine.

A daily skin care routine will hydrate skin, boost cellular turnover, reduce dark circles and skin texture as well as dark spots. If your skin feels tight, then it would be worth incorporating an eye cream on top of your facial moisturizer and broad spectrum spf hydrating sunscreen. To keep your skin moisturized you can also use a facial oil or a vitamin c serum to boost collagen and elastin production.

If you want to keep your skin hydrated, then you need a routine for your skin type, whether that includes glycolic acid for cellular turnover, facial oil, eye cream, any board certified dermatologist will tell you that skin care is important.
