Last Updated on December 22, 2021

How to best care for thinning aging skin?

When you were younger, you probably didn’t really bother about skincare. Who hasn’t slept in their makeup, or not bothered following that ten step skincare routine after a night out? But the issue is different when we get older.

If there’s one thing you should be doing as you mature is looking after your skin. Our skin just isn’t the same at 50 as it was when we were 20. Skin care for aging skin is a whole other process that is worth looking into.

But wait.

Have you suffered from wrinkles, dry skin and sagging skin no matter what products you use? Your favorite products over the years just arent working now your skin is mature. To start with, mature skin needs the best skincare for aging skin.

I’m going to be taking you through what you should and shouldn’t be doing to care for your mature skin properly. As your skin ages, it doesn’t renew itself as it used to, and fresh new skin takes longer to come. Elastin and collagen production is slowed, which means your skin loses that elasticity that keeps looking fresh.

Ready to take back that youthful glow?

Why our skin ages over time

No matter how much you care for your skin over your life, the internal aging process happens naturally. That means wrinkles, thinning skin, sagging, and dryness can quickly become the new normal for our skin.

The main two components that keep our skin fresh and youthful are elastin and collagen. These diminish over time and can make your skin weaker and less elastic than it used to be. Often, these changes can depend on genetics, not just your age. If your parents started getting wrinkles at age 30, it’s likely you will too, even if you take good care of your skin.

There are some things you can do to combat external aging, however. External aging has to do with your environment, such as smoking, your diet, and repetitive facial expressions as well as sun exposure. All of these things can age your skin prematurely, or worsen your skin. Exposure to the sun is one of the worst, since it can cause wrinkles, age spots, and a leathery texture that can add years onto your skin.

Let’s take a look at how to care for aging skin naturally, and even undo some of the damage caused by these factors.

First things first, you need a good skincare regimen, to be able to know how to care for aging skin for men or women.

How to take care of skin for anti aging

What is a good skincare routine for aging skin?

There are an overwhelming amount of skincare products in the stores, but simply buying a tonne of products with “anti-aging” plastered across the label isn’t enough. You’ll be pleased to know, that all you really need is a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Adding optional serums can also be beneficial, but that is up to you.

Cleanser

Looking after your facial skin isn’t the same as taking care of your body. How to care for aging thin skin on arms? Since the skin on your body is different to your facial skin, you may need different products. For example, if your body tends to get dry skin, but your face is oily, then using the same soap for both just won’t cut it. That is even more true for aging skin, since it tends to be much more fragile and delicate on the face and hands.

Avoid using harsh detergents and soaps that can strip away your skin’s natural oils, and dry it out further. Nonfragranced soap is a good idea.

Optional- Serum

To be able to know how to care for aging skin for me, then I would recommend boosting your skin with a serum. There are many options to choose from, depending on what you need.

Retinoids- Also known as Vitamin A derivatives, they promote cell turnover, stimulate collagen production and even out skin tone. This active ingredient is perfect for anti aging skincare

Antioxidants- This is vitamin C and E, which help to fight free radicals and protect your skin from the environment and sun damage. Find an antioxidant rich vitamin serum for your skincare routine.

Hyaluronic acid and ceramides-Using ingredients like these and glycerin or jojoba oil will be key in reducing fine lines and restoring the skin’s natural oils. This is going to help nourish your skin from the effects of anti-aging skincare, but also prevent wrinkles forming from dehydrated skin. It hydrates skin!

Peptides- They help to nourish and repair skin damage, and are essential in any skincare regimen.

If you struggle to find products with the right ingredients, go for simple, basic formulas and then add a serum with your desired ingredient. This is a good way of saving money and still getting an effective skincare routine.

Moisturizer

So many times i hear people saying that they skip moisturizer because their skin is already oily. This is one of the worst things you can do. Even for oily skin types, you need to restore moisture that other factors could end up stripping away. External aging factors like the sun or cleansing your face can leave it dry and prone to even more wrinkles and fine lines.

I recommend buying a moisturizer for your skin types, and finding one with key anti aging ingredients such as the ones listed above. For oily skin types, this is going to be a lighter, oily free moisturizer, but dry skin may require heavier creams.

You can also find heavier creams for your body since this is more prone to dryness, especially at the elbows, knees and heels. Wherever the skin is thicker and is exposed to more stress, will require a heavier cream.

Sunscreen

The final, but most important step is sunscreen. This should be worn daily, regardless if you plan on going out or not, and if the sun is shining or not. Make sure you apply it to your face, but also your ears, neck and also arms and hands which tend to suffer the most from exposure. Often, the skin on the back of your hands will show the most signs of aging, since it tends to be neglected the most.

Go for a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least spf 15 but preferably even higher such as 30spf. You can also find moisturizers with spf in it. Wear protective clothing and shield your skin from the sun to reduce wrinkles. Wearing water resistant sun lotion that protects both UVA and UVB rays is key. Protect your skin from the sun!

Tips to keep your skin healthy at a mature age

Here are some additional things you can do to prevent unnecessary aging of your skin:

Avoid sun exposure- aside from wearing SPF, avoid the harmful UV rays from the sun that can cause skin cancer and signs of aging like sunspots. This is called photoaging and can be avoided by covering up both in winter and summer and wearing SPF.

Quit smoking- Smoking is not only a repetitive action that can cause wrinkles from facial expressions, such as around the mouth, but nicotine can cause a lot of damage. It breaks down the colagen and elastin in the skin and reduced blood flow to your face, making your skin look worn out.

Get enough sleep- Beauty sleep is real, and you can develop under-eye circles from not sleeping well as well as not letting your skin recover from the day’s stress.

Eat a healthy diet- Try to drink a lot of water, but also vitamin a, vitamin c, vitamin e, and selenium as well as fatty acids to help take care of your skin from the inside out. These are found in dairy products, citrus fruits, sunflower seeds, avocados, and walnuts or fish for a balanced diet.

Final Thoughts

Everybody wants healthy skin, but looking after your skin’s health can become trickier as you get older. Skin changes from the skin aging, developing deep wrinkles, damage from the sun’s rays can make a skincare routine essential. However, wrinkle creams aren’t enough.

The skin cancer foundation says that to avoid musculoskeletal and skin diseases as well as damage from the sun’s rays, it’s vital to protect skin with sun protection such as SPF. This is the most important anti aging step in a skincare routine to avoid skin cancer.

To reveal healthy skin, it’s important to exfoliate dead skin cells and include exfoliation as part of your skin care regimen.

Your skin begins with a good skin care routine. Knowing how to look after your skin health is key to get clean skin, get rid of age spots and acne scars, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, thinner skin and other signs of aging. You need to include anti aging products such as a gentle cleanser, prescription creams, chemical peels, sun protection factor sunscreen, wrinkle cream, and facial moisturizer for your skin type. Avoid the tanning beds if you want to avoid skin cancer, and maintain a youthful appearance.
