What Is Rice Water For Hair?

Rice water is the starchy water left over after the rice has been cooked or left to soak; it is created when the rice is fermented; it is rich in vitamins and minerals.

It can be applied to hair to leave it smooth and shiny and be used as a treatment to help promote hair growth.

Many people find benefits of using a rice water treatment, but there is a lack of scientific research to back up the results, but it seems effective.

Benefits Of Rice Water On Hair:

Despite it not being backed up by scientific research, those who use rice water believe that rice water has some serious benefits for hair.

Detangles hair:

When applied to your hair, rice water instantly conditions the hair making it easier to detangle; it works to smooth the cuticles and reduce surface friction.

This allows the brush or wide tooth comb to detangle through the hair gently; the rice water prevents strands from tangling.

This makes it super beneficial to brush your hair while wet, i.e., my curly hair girls. This leaves hair feeling smoother and shinier as a result.

Encourages hair growth:

Rice water is brilliant for promoting hair growth; it is rich in amino acids, which help in hair regeneration and aid in faster hair growth of your hair growth.

It is also rich in vitamins B, C, and E, which help nourish the hair strand and help it grow. It works to strengthen the hair strands to make them stronger and hence grow longer.

You should do a rice water rinse after washing your hair to nourish the ends with the proteins for the best results. Do not leave on the hair for more than 10 mins as this will do the opposite.

How To Use Rice Water For Hair:

Looking to do a rice water rinse at home? Well, here’s how you make and use your own rice water in your beauty routine.

Step One:

The first thing you’ll need to do is grab all your ingredients, so grab yourself a bowl, some organic uncooked rice, and water.

I like to use a cup of rice for 1-2 cups of water.

You can use any rice–white, brown, jasmine, basmati, whatever you have. Just be sure that the rice is organic; this is key.

Step Two:

Rinse the uncooked rice using a sieve and drain; take your time with this step as you’re rinsing out all the nasty ingredients in the rice water.

Add to a clean mason jar or container with a lid, with 1-2 cups of water, and leave it to sit at room temperature. For at least 12 hours but up to 24 hours.

This will let the rice ferment and release all the juicy vitamins.

Step Three:

Fast forward 12 hours or 24 hours and strain the rice, saving the water.

You can save the rice for cooking, but eating soaked rice is healthier and can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer.

Pour the golden water into a spray bottle, or leave it in the mason jar; you’ll be doing a rice water rinse with this water shortly.

Step Four:

Shampoo and condition your hair like usual. I recommend you give yourself a good 5-minute massage when shampooing and rinsing your hair; this will help stimulate the scalp.

I would recommend going for a sulfate-free wash as sulfates can be very stripping for the hair and cause damage.

Step Five:

Once you’ve conditioned your hair, pour the rice water over your hair and scalp, massaging it into your hair for at least a minute or two.

Leave it to sit on your scalp for at least 20 minutes; I prefer to leave it for 30 minutes and even up to 45 minutes if I have the time.

If you have thick hair, you may use all the rice water in one rinse. However, those with fine hair can get away with using it twice. Just make sure you pop it in the fridge after use.

It will stay good for about a week or two, so make sure you use it all up or half the amount you use when making rice water.

Once you’ve left the rice water on for 30 minutes or more, you can rinse with water and then dry and style like usual.

How Often Should You Use Rice Water For Hair Growth?

As a general rule of thumb, you should do a rice water rinse treatment twice a week if you have curly hair start with this treatment once a week and see how you go.

If you have particularly oily hair, you can get away with doing a rice water rinse three times a week to make your hair grow.

It all depends on what works for your hair. Just don’t use months-old rice water; make sure you use it within a week. It’s super easy and affordable to make rice water, though, so it’s good!

Summary:

Using a rice water treatment regularly in your hair care routine has some major benefits on your hair. Whether you’re using rice water for hair growth or to strengthen your hair, you’ll be sure to see the benefits.

Just remember to put the rice in the fridge once you’ve finished using it.
