DIY Hair Mask For Curly Hair

No one is born with perfect hair unless they’re some hidden angel, but for curly hair, the struggle of looking after our curls is no easy task.

Curly hair is beyond the most fragile and driest hair type of them all; sometimes, store-bought hair masks are too harsh for our curls, especially when they’re full of chemicals.

But can you hydrate your curls with a DIY hair mask?

Absolutely and I’m here to show you my top recipes. Working out the ingredients you need is easy as you choose the ingredients that benefit your hair type and purpose.

Hydrating and moisturizing your curls are super important whether you have wavy, curly, or coily hair. Maintaining a good deep conditioning routine will allow your curls to thrive.

Luckily the DIY hair mask recipes I’ve handpicked for you today include ingredients that are probably lying around your house, and if not, they’ll only be a couple of bucks down the store.

Avocado and Honey Hair Mask

If your curls are a little thirsty and lifeless, a brilliant way to bring those thirsty curls back to life is creating a mask with avocado and honey.

Anyone with a full head of unruly curls knows the struggle of keeping them hydrated and full of life. Since our natural oils struggle to travel around all the twists and turns from our roots to the ends, the ends of our curls become very dry very easily.

From the hair care products to humidity in the environment, there is no wonder that our curls need a little hydration kick to revive our curls.

Avocados are brilliant as they contain naturals and lots of good fatty acids, which help strengthen and protect your curly ends, leaving them looking healthy and hydrated.

Avocados also act as a detangler making your life a hell of a lot easier when combing through the treatment mask from your roots to the ends. The last thing we want is to pull or snag and damage our precious curl shape or cause breakage.

Honey is another brilliant active ingredient in moisturizing dry curls and scalp. It also reduces hair breakage and restores shine which is a huge bonus for any curly girl.

It also improves natural hair condition by softening the hair cuticle, reducing frizz, and promoting the natural curl shape.

I’ve even included olive oil in this recipe. It has some serious benefits for reducing damage and breakage and sealing the appearance of split ends.

Since we curly girls can only brush our hair while wet, it means our hair is most prone to damage, so the olive oil helps strengthen the tips of our hair. It even promotes hair growth and strengthens the hair shaft as a whole.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • – 1 whole avocado
  • – 1 tbsp honey
  • – 1 tbsp olive oil
  • – squeeze of lemon

Grab yourself a blender and then add all the ingredients into the blender and blend until smooth. You can then put it in a mason jar to store or apply directly to your hair.

Evenly coat your mask across the hair, comb it through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, so every strand is coated.

Since I have quite thick, porous curls, I tend to double up on the ingredients and work in sections starting underneath and working my way through each section.

I then leave the mask on for an hour or two and then wash my hair like normal. I will do this every one to two weeks as my curls get quite dry and in need of refreshing.

This is one of my favorite DIY hair masks for dry curly hair.

If you want an even more deep conditioning mask you can even add 1/2 cup of coconut milk. This helps add shine to damaged strands, smooths out frizz and helps strenghten your curls.

It can also help define your curl by providing your curls with moisture, giving it a real hydration kick. 1

Aloe Vera Hair Mask DIY For Curly Hair:

You probably already know the benefits of aloe vera for your hair, but it is especially beneficial for curly hair. It helps strengthen and protect the hair strand.

Aloe vera has many active ingredients that work to strengthen your strands. It can even promote hair growth by stimulating the scalp and strengthening the ends.

There are some super benefits of aloe vera for curly hair

It can also protect your hair from UV damage; aloe vera gel forms a seal over the cuticle, which can help protect it from UV and heat damage.

This recipe also contains coconut oil which has some brilliant benefits as a hair mask or leave-in treatment. It can help moisturize and provide a protective coating to seal the hair.

It also helps seal split ends and strengthens hair to prevent breakage. The high vitamins and essential fatty acids penetrate deep into the hair strands to moisturize the hair.

To top it all off, you can either add regular cows milk, or if you’re dairy intolerant, vegan, or trying to cut down on your animal produce like me; you can also use coconut milk.

Cow’s milk has some great benefits, such as strengthening hair thanks to the proteins and lipids. The calcium also helps promote hair growth.

However, you can get all of these benefits from coconut milk, and you don’t need to use a cow. It’s a brilliant vegan and sustainable alternative.

Here’s what you need:

  • – 4 tablespoons aloe vera gel
  • – 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • – 6 tablespoons coconut milk

The first thing you’ll want to do is melt the coconut oil. Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, it will make mixing with the other ingredients easier.

You can either mix the rest of the ingredients in a bowl using a whisk or chuck all the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.

Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, it is best to leave it in a glass jar and refrigerate when not using.

Apply at the roots and work your way down to the ends. Comb it for even coverage and work in sections if you have thick, textured curls like myself.

I then like to tie my hair up in a loose towel, wrap around the microfibre towel I use for my treatments, and leave it for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing.

Homemade Yogurt And Honey Hair Mask:

Out of all of the recipes I have shared with you today, this yogurt hair mask is the one that will be sure to add the most shine to your curls.

This blend of yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and honey will leave your curls feeling incredibly soft and glowing. It will deeply condition your curls and hydrate your hair to reduce frizz.

Apple cider vinegar will help balance your pH levels; if your pH levels are unbalanced, this will cause your curls to look unruly and dry.

Apple cider vinegar also helps fight bacteria, add shine, condition hair, and stimulate hair growth. It will even help tame frizz and define your curls.

Yogurt also has some major benefits on curly hair as it is loaded with fatty acids and vitamins. It helps curls retain and maintain moisture, so they stay frizz-free for longer.

It also minimizes losing your curl shape as it keeps follicles healthy along with balancing your pH on your scalp.

Honey has both emollient and humectant properties, making it an excellent hair moisturizer. Emollients help smooth the hair follicle and add shine to full hair, while humectants bond with water to add moisture and seal in moisture.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • – 1/2 cup of yogurt
  • – 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
  • – 1 tablespoon of honey

This method is fairly straightforward as you don’t need to blend anything or melt any of the ingredients. All you need to do is mix them well and apply.

Start at the roots and work your way down to the tips. Take the time to spend 5 minutes massaging your scalp; this will rinse the mask of all its benefits.

It will also stimulate the scalp to promote hair growth.

After 5 minutes, leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes and rinse. Then apply your leave-in conditioner and style your curls like usual.

Banana And Avocado DIY Hair Mask

If you have unruly curls and are looking for a mask that will make them more manageable, this hair mask recipe is it. It helps restore moisture, conditions the hair inside and out.

Bananas have antimicrobial properties which can help heal flaky and dry scalp along with relieving dandruff symptoms. It can also soften your hair.

Avocados are a brilliant source of biotin and B-vitamins. Avocados also contain minerals, including potassium and magnesium, which may seal cuticle cells.

This will keep your hair looking smooth, shiny and prevent it from breaking. This hair mask will improve the flexibility of your curls, making them more manageable.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • – 1 ripe avocado
  • – 1 ripe banana
  • – 5 – 10 drops lavender essential oil

For this hair mask recipe to work, it is key that you have very ripe bananas and avocados; if they’re too squishy to eat, then they’re ideal for your hair.

Mash the avocado and banana well and then process in the blender to remove any lumps; add in the essential oil of your choice and blend a little more.

Apply to your wet hair, starting at the root and making your way to the ends, comb through with a wide-tooth comb and leave for 20-30 minutes.

If your hair is a little brittle you can also add extra virgin olive oil to the mix, olive oil is brilliant for strengthening curls, restoring shine and hydrating your curls.

So there you have it, the best DIY hair masks for curly hair. Whether you have curly, coily, or just wavy hair, your curls will still be gasping for moisture, so maintaining a good deep condition is key.

The top cause of frizz is lack of hydration, and since curly hair is the driest hair type, it is most prone to frizz.

Give some of these recipes a go, and you’ll notice the difference in your hair.
