DIY Hair Gel

Have you been looking for some great hair gel that keeps your locks in place throughout the whole day but doesn’t irritate your skin or damage your scalp?

Well, you should try making your own hair gel as it proves a great natural hair product that can promote hair growth and keep it looking healthy and fresh.

In this article, we’re going to cover a DIY hair gel recipe that will work wonders on your head. The best thing about homemade hair gel is that it’s customizable but it has a ton of other benefits, for example, you’ll certainly be saving a few dollars in the long run which is something we can all get behind.

Store-bought hair gel can be very hit and miss as you’ve probably noticed with many having artificial ingredients that can irritate some people’s scalp and if not used correctly is capable of causing long-term damage to your hair.

So, whether you have curly hair, oily hair, or receding hair, let’s show you a recipe that will leave you with the strong hold that you’ve been looking for.

Flaxseed Hair Gel Recipe

So what is flaxseed?

Flaxseed is, unsurprisingly, a seed that is high in nutritional value. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, protein, and fiber which all contribute towards making hair healthy and fresh.

You can make your own flaxseed hair gel at home with the following recipe:

Ingredients needed:
  • Water
  • Flaxseeds
  • 1 Small wooden spoon
  • Container
  • Empty glass jar
  • Stockings
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • Aloe vera (optional)

Recipe:

  1. Water – Firstly, add 2.5 cups of water to a pan
  2. Flaxseed – Then add about 1/4 of a cup’s worth of flaxseed to the pan of water.
  3. Boil – Now bring the water to boil for about 10 minutes and stir the mixture so it doesn’t clump up at the bottom of the pan. You can stop when the mixture appears gooey.
  4. Cooldown – Next, turn off the gas and let the mixture cool down in the pot as this will make it more gel-like.
  5. Filter – Pour the mixture into your stocking and let it drip into the empty jar. Once the dripping slows down, just squeeze to let any mixture out any that’s leftover.
  6. Aloe and Essential Oil (optional) – Add some aloe vera gel and your favorite essential oil to add a cooling effect and make your hair gel smell better. As a recommendation, we’d suggest using a few drops of coconut oil if you plan on adding essential oils.
  7. Storage – Now that’s done, you have your very own DIY flaxseed gel. For the best results, we’d recommend storing your new hair gel in an airtight container in the refrigerator as this can make it last up to 2-3 weeks before needing to make a fresh batch.
  8. Application – You can apply this natural hair gel just like any store-bought hair gels, just be sure to wash your hair with warm water before applying. If you want some tips on how best to apply your gel then check out our article on How to use hair gel.

Gelatin Hair gel Recipe

This one is really easy to make and the ingredients are things you probably already have around the house so if you’re pressed for time and cash then try it out.

Plus, the gelatin in this hair gel recipe is full of proteins that will make your hair healthy and strong.

Ingredients needed:
  • 1/4 teaspoon of unflavored gelatin
  • 1/2 cup hot water
Recipe:
  1. Mix – First things first, mix your gelatin and hot water together in a bowl and stir for a few minutes until the gelatin has completely dissolved.
  2. Essential Oils (optional) – Again, you can add essential oil of your choice but it isn’t necessary to make a good hair gel.
  3. Refrigerate – Now transfer the mixture to a clean jar or your preferred hair gel container and place it in the refrigerator for an hour, this will help it thicken into a gel-like consistency.
  4. Storage – You’ll want to store your new hair gel in the refrigerator between uses which should help the gel last about 2 weeks but using distilled water to make the gel will help it last longer.

Essential Oils

You’ve probably heard the term essential oils before and we even mention them in our recipes above but what are they and do you need them?

Well, an essential oil is a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic odor of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.

You don’t need to add essential oils but many have benefits for your hair so if you want the most from your DIY hair gel, we’d recommend you try them out.
