They’re rich in omega-3s, protein, and fiber, it provides your hair with the same benefits as your body, but instead of consuming them, you can make them into a brilliant hair gel recipe.

In terms of hold, the flaxseed is the strongest, gelatin is medium, and aloe vera is the lightest.

If you’re looking for bouncy, defined, and nourished curls, then this recipe is for you! Here are some of the top benefits:

Eliminates dryness:

Flaxseed gel is rich in vitamin E and omega-3 acids, which nourish dry, damaged hair. These fatty acids help rehydrate the hair and add moisture.

Flaxseed gel can soften hair, add shine and rehydrate strands, but it won’t work for everyone; if you find it dries your hair out, just a couple of drops of jojoba or coconut oil will help add moisture and soften your hair.

Helps to define curls and reduce frizz:

Flaxseed gel works wonder to help curls clump and reducing frizz. Flaxseed provides the perfect balance of moisture and hydration for curls, promoting the natural curl shape.

I personally love to add aloe vera gel as it has major benefits on curly hair, such as strengthen hair; aloe vera has many active ingredients that work to strengthen your strands.

It can also help control greasy hair. It can also protect your hair from UV damage; aloe vera gel forms a seal over the cuticle, which can help protect it from UV and heat damage.

So here’s what you’ll need:

  • – 1/4 cup aloe vera gel
  • – 2 cups water
  • – 1/3 cup flaxseeds
  • – 10-20 drops of essential oils (I like lavender or rosemary for stimulating hair growth, but if you want that little extra nourishment, you can add jojoba or coconut oil)


The first thing you’ll want to do is place the water and flax seeds in a pot and bring them to a boil once boiling reduces heat and allows them to simmer for around 10 minutes.

Once the liquid has simmered for 10 minutes, remove the pot from the stove and strain the liquid through a cheesecloth; squeeze all the gel through the cheesecloth using a pair of tongs– not your hands as the liquid will be scalding hot still.

Pour the gel into a glass jar, store it in the fridge for up to 10 days, and use it on your soaking wet hair when styling.


Recipe Number Two: Gelatin Hair Gel:

Now we all know that gelatin is used to make jelly and candy, but it actually has some crazy benefits on your hair too.

Gelatin contains keratin proteins that bind with hair to strengthen strands and heal damaged areas to help smooth the cuticle; it also boosts shine and reduces breakage.

Research shows that gelatin can also improve hair thickness and growth; it can also help with hair loss when applied to the hair by strengthening hair strands and promoting hair growth.

Gelatin can be extremely beneficial for hair and can make hair strong and flexible, but too much protein can cause hair to harden, lose flexibility and become vulnerable.

But don’t worry, this recipe won’t cause this, but it is best to switch between this recipe and the aloe vera recipe or the flaxseed gel recipe, especially on natural hair.

What you’ll need:

  • – 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon gelatin
  • – 1/2 cup of hot water
  • – 20 drops of essential oils (Rosemary, lavender, or peppermint essential oils are brilliant)


Start by dissolving the gelatin into the warm water with 1/4 teaspoon of gelatin for a looser hold and 1/2 teaspoon for a stronger hold.

Add in your chosen essential oils and mix well, pour into an airtight container and use within 10 days. I like to use when styling my curls and apply in sections to soaking wet hair. 1

Aloe Vera Gel For Hair:

Aloe vera is another brilliant ingredient to include in your DIY hair gel for curls; it is already in gel form and has some crazy benefits on your curls.

There are some serious benefits of aloe vera for curly hair

As I said, earlier aloe vera gel alone has some great benefits for your hair. The main one is that it strengthens hair; it has many active ingredients to strengthen your strands.

It can also help control greasy hair. It can also protect your hair from UV damage; it forms a seal over the cuticle, which can help protect it from UV and heat damage.

It is a brilliant moisturizer and scalp conditioner, but it also offers light hold, making it a brilliant gel for curls.

What you’ll need:

  • – 1/2 cup aloe vera gel
  • – 20-30 drops of your chosen essential oil


If you’re using aloe vera gel straight from the plant, the first thing you’ll need to do is blend it up until it forms a spreadable gel; I like to add my essential oils to the blender, so it’s easy to mix.

It should be quick a thick consistency, but it should still be easy to use; adding the essential oils to the mixture should help thin the consistency slightly to make it easy to spread.

If you prefer to use store-bought aloe vera, it should be stabilized to extend shelf life, it should last at room temperature for at least 3 months, but fresh aloe vera should last a week or two if refrigerated.

Easy Add-Ins To Your Homemade Hair Gel:

You can add some easy ingredients to your hair gel that will nourish and hold natural hair.

  • – You can add aloe vera gel to your flaxseed gel recipe if you prefer the mixture consistency to be much thicker. Plus, if you’d like UV benefits, this can provide a protective barrier over your curl strand.
  • Shea Butter: If you have particularly thick, coarse, dry curls, you can add shea butter to your recipe; this will help moisturize and nourish curls.

It acts as a natural heat protectant that creates a barrier around your hair strands; this shields them from heat damage. 

It is also brilliant emollient and occlusive, so it works well to hydrate strands and nourishes the ends. Coconut oil has brilliant moisturizing qualities and can also provide a protective coating to seal hair. 


  • Essential oils: Some essential oils are brilliant for strengthening strands and stimulating hair growth. I personally love using lavender, peppermint, tea tree, or rosemary oil.
  • Honey: Honey has both emollient and humectant properties, making it an excellent hair moisturizer. Emollients help smooth the hair follicle and add shine to full hair, while humectants bond with water to add moisture and seal in moisture.
  • Emollients: Argan oil and jojoba oils are brilliant emollients. Emollients are particularly brilliant if you have high porosity hair as they work to smooth and close the cuticle, creating a barrier over the cuticle to seal in moisture.
  • Epsom salt: Epsom salt can create a stronger hold; adding Epsom salt to your DIY gel can also help enhance the hold, but it can be very drying for some people, so leave it out if you have dry curls.
  • Preservative: Want your gel to last more than a few weeks? Well, you can add a 1/4 teaspoon to every 1 cup of gel. If you have 4 cups of gel, you can add 1 teaspoon of preservative.


I have been doing so many DIY recipes recently for my hair, and my curls haven’t felt so moisturized and hydrated like it is at the moment.

Just remember to store all these gels in an air-tight container in the fridge and use them within a week or two; they’re a much more affordable option than store-bought gels.

My favorite is the flaxseed gel, as I have very thick, coarse curls. I like to add in a little bit of aloe vera and shea butter when my hair is a little dry.
