Searching for the secret to how you can get hair like silk naturally?

Some people are born with it. Gorgeous, luscious locks that are shiny and silky smooth. Getting silky hair is not an impossible task, but it’s going to take work. Whether or not you’re lucky to be born with good hair genes, I think it’s safe to say we all dream of having silky, shiny hair.

The good news?

You can have it. I’m going to take you through several DIY hair masks using ingredients from your kitchen that are packed full of nutrients to get those luscious locks.

If you’re wondering about your hair, or don’t know where to start or have the funds to spend loads of dollars on products, don’t worry. You don’t need to spend money on loads of stuff, with only a few products and the right technique, you can get silky hair right from the comfort of your home.

Here’s a tip- Whichever mask you do, make sure you are consistent as results take time. For more intense hydration, use a hair cap and wrap a towel over your head to generate heat while the mask is in your hair.

Let’s get straight to business.

Why hair masks

In many cultures, there are traditional uses of several super foods and common ingredients you can find in your kitchen to use on your head. Passed down through the generations, these nutrient-rich ingredients can be used as a hair mask to enrich your hair. In 20 mins, you can feed your hair with a boost of vitamins and antioxidants that will leave your hair feeling restored and nourished.

Whether you want to add shine, hydrate, and tame frizzy ends, stimulate hair growth, and even fight off scalp problems or infections, you’ll be able to create your very own diy daily moisturizer for natural hair to solve your hair issues.

So many shop bought treatments or hair salon products claim to solve a multitude of problems, but such chemicals can sometimes be even worse for your hair. Thats why I’ve gone through the most beneficial hair masks that only require all natural ingredients from your kitchen.

The best part?

It’s not complicated to make, and will only use a couple of ingredients. Hair masks are DIY hair moisturizers. No expensive treatments, or long hours making it. I guarantee you’ll be trying out these hair masks immediately!

DIY natural hair moisturizer for frizzy ends

Banana, Yogurt + Honey

You’ll only need three ingredients for this one- banana, yogurt, and honey.

Bananas- These are rich in potassium, and are a great natural hair conditioner. They also have carbohydrates, vitamins, and natural oils, so you’ll be able to eliminate frizz!

Yogurt- Use plain yogurt, it is rich in lactic acid and will be ideal for this hair mask recipe. It gets rid of dull and damaged hair.

Honey- This one really is a superfood, it is a natural humectant making it an ideal ingredient in any hair mask recipe.

You will need:

  • 1 banana sliced
  • 2 Tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

What you need to do:

  • Blend all the ingredients together in a blender, or by hand until they are mixed well together.
  • Put the mix into your damp hair from top to bottom, focusing on the ends of your hair rather than the roots.
  • Leave the mask in your hair for a minimum of 30 mins, and then wash out with shampoo in your shower. For best results, put your hair in a shower cap and wrap your towel around it to generate heat.

Use this mask once a week or as often as you shower for best results.

For Shiny Hair

Coconut oil, strawberry, honey hair mask

Coconut oil- This is a superfood for hair. It’s great for retaining moisture and preventing hair breakage. It is full of fatty acids, and can condition on a deeper level than other ingredients.

Strawberry– Full of vitamin C, it helps to increase collagen in your hair and reduce excess oil and grease for a glossy shine.

Honey- We could go on forever about honey, but it is truly one of the most moisturizing ingredients you could have in your hair mask, as well as giving your hair a healthy boost.

You will need:

  • 5-9 strawberries, depending on the length of your hair.
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

What you need to do

  1. Blend all of the ingredients together until they form a puree
  2. Put it throughout your damp hair from the top down, avoiding the roots mostly.
  3. Rinse well with water. You can use this as a pre shampoo or after.

For Hair growth

Rice Water

This type of hair mask is a little different, but it is one of the strongest out there. If you want to grow your hair faster, or have damaged hair from using heat styling tools, then rice water is going to be your best friend. It gives a boost of protein into your hair that helps prevent breakage.

Rice- This simple but amazing food has been used in many cultures as a hair mask. Using the fermented water from rice can help boost your hair and repair it as it is protein rich, just like eggs.

You will need:

  • 1 cup of rice
  • A sealable jar such as a mason jar
  • Water

What you need to do:

  1. Prepare this mixture 24 hours before you intend to use it, ideally the day you will wash your hair.
  2. Wash the rice first by rinsing it under the tap to remove impurities.
  3. Put the rice into a mason jar and add water. Mix it up and then allow it to rest for 12-24 hours (no more!) so that the water can ferment and soak up all the minerals and vitamins it needs.
  4. On the day you use it, remove the rice and keep the water. Take it with you when you shower to use as a final rinse after you have finished washing and conditioning your hair. Pour it onto your hair and scalp, let it sit for 15 mins and then rinse out with water.

As this is a protein treatment, to avoid overloading your hair with protein use it once a week and then once a month only, depending on how your hair reacts. To make it easier to use, you can put it into a spray bottle to make a diy hair moisturizer spray. It’s worth being regular with this one!

For Oily, Greasy Hair or Problem scalp

Apple Cider Vinegar

This ingredient is famous for antibacterial and antifungal properties, especially if you suffer from flaky, itchy scalp or greasy hair. It balances your hair ph without stripping it of moisture, and infusing it with vitamins too, for smooth hair and a healthy scalp.

You will need:

  • Apple cider vinegar
  • A spray bottle
  • Water

What you need to do:

  1. Simply dilute a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into water and put it into a spray or bottle.
  2. After your regular shampoo and condition, pour this mixture over your hair, and massage it into your scalp.
  3. Leave it on for 15 mins and then rinse out with water

For Damaged Hair

Eggs, Olive Oil, Honey

Eggs- You probably already know eggs are an abundant source of protein, and will help to nourish your hair and add shine. Its ideal for repairing hair damage and conditioning your hair.

Olive oil- Using oils in your hair care routine is a must if you want to lock in moisture and keep your hair happy and healthy. Plus, with a simple ingredient like olive oil, you always have it on hand and can get all the benefits from olives too.

Honey- This one is a superfood for hair nourishment and locking in moisture.

You will need:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Shower cap

What you need to do:

  1. Crack open the egg and whisk it all up. Mix in all the ingredients and whisk until they are all mixed together.
  2. Apply onto your hair and your scalp too.
  3. Put on a shower cap and leave it on for a minimum of 30 mins.
  4. Wash your hair as normal with shampoo and conditioner.

This works best as a pre shower mask that you can do 1-2 times a week. You’ll quickly notice stronger and softer hair

Scalp issues and Hair growth

Onion hair mask

This one is one of my favorite ever hair masks, guaranteed to show results.

Onion- Onion is known for its antifungal properties that can help cleanse the scalp and stimulate hair growth. It has a high sulfur content which boosts circulation as well as nutrients like biotin, manganese, flavonoids and vitamin c among a host of others for shiny, healthy hair.

You will need:

  • One onion

What you need to do:

  1. Juice the onion. The way I like to do it is to cut up the onion into small bits, and then using a napkin, put a portion of onion into the napkin and squeeze to remove all of the liquid. Collect this liquid into a bowel.
  2. Use your fingertips or a syringe and massage the onion oil into your scalp. Do this until the juice covers your entire scalp and there is no more juice left.
  3. Leave this one for 15mins and then wash your hair as normal

These are my favorite diy natural hair moisturizer masks to use, both for silky hair and a healthy scalp, however there are a couple of other things you can also do to get healthy, long hair that is nourished and smooth.

A couple of extra tips for silky hair

Use the right products

Try to go for sulfate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner. SLS can be so stripping and make your hair super dry, while the silicone might make the hair seem nice but prevents actual moisture from penetrating the hair shaft and adding buildup to your hair.

Use Oils

Aside from the hair masks mentioned on here, invest in a couple of oils, particularly castor oil for hair growth and argan or jojoba oil for hydration. You can really use any oil including coconut oil and olive oil too, simply heat up a couple of tablespoons and massage your scalp with it. This is going to get blood to your scalp and promote well nourished hair follicles. You can also use oils as a hair mask onto your hair as a pre shower treatment.

Rinse with cold water

This is going to help seal your hair’s cuticles and seal in that moisture. It also means none of the moisture is going to evaporate due to the heat.

Get regular haircuts

You don’t have to chop off loads of hair, but getting rid of dead ends in a regular trim can really make a difference when it comes to have luscious locks. If left, the split ends can travel and cause more breakage higher up the shaft than if you just trimmed them as they started. I’d recommend getting your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks for best results.

Don’t wash your hair everyday

This is going to sound nasty, but let a little grease develop on your hair. Washing your hair daily is stripping it of natural oils that it needs to be nourished, so if you over wash your hair, not only is it going to be dry but it can produce too much oil leading to greasy hair. Train your hair so you only need to wash it once or twice a week max.

Don’t use heat styling tools

This one might sound obvious, but try cutting out the heat styling tools and only straightening your hair once a week if you can’t do it daily. This includes your blowdryer, let your hair air dry by squeezing out the water and drying it with a towel.

Use a microfiber hair towel

Using a microfiber hair towel can really reduce damage once your hair is wet. That means no brushing it, no rubbing it, just let the microfibre towel soak up the water and then air dry.

Silky smooth hair is only a few steps away

Now you know all the hair secrets behind shiny locks, what’s stopping you from having that hair everyone envies?

Only a few steps away is your kitchen with a host of super ingredients you didn’t even know could help you reach all of your hair goals. The key is being consistent, and using the right masks for your hair type.

Which hair mask will you be trying out today?
