Best Hair Dryer Brush- A Buyer’s Guide:
Don’t we all love making our life easier when it comes to styling our hair in the morning, and if you’re slightly cack-handed when it comes to styling your hair, then hot air brushes will be your new best friend.
The best part of a hot hair brush is that it can cut down styling time; it also helps to dry and style your hair at the same time. Hot air brushes can help volumize flat hair and give you a bouncy-looking blowout, sleek, smooth finish, or even beachy curls.
No more using the flat iron or curling iron after drying your hair with a hairdryer; blow dryer brushes do it all. You can have bounciness and texture without damage!
Many ceramic barrel brushes actually do a better job than flat irons at smoothing your hair and reducing frizz by evenly distributing heat for less damage. I would also recommend going for flexible boar of nylon bristles as they offer a convenient detangling element.
I’m here to run you through everything you need to know when buying blow dryer brushes and how to achieve the perfect blowout only using one tool– this will be an absolute game changer!
Let’s get down to business, my friends!
How To Use A Blow Dryer Brush
So how do you use blow dryer brushes? It’s pretty simple, really, and once you know how to use one, your hair game will transform– and I mean it!!
Whether you’re after a bouncy blowout, voluminous waves, curls, or want a sleek straight hair finish, an oval or round brush will do the trick.
Step One: Leave Your Hair To Partially Dry:
The top tip is not to use a blow dryer brush on wet hair; it is best to leave your hair dry for a little while (not 100%) for the best results.
You can wrap your hair up in a towel for half an hour or so before using a hot air brush; this will help absorb any excess moisture out of the hair strands.
I would recommend that you use a microfiber towel over your regular cotton bath towel. This is much gentler on hair and will prevent your hair from going frizzy.
Working with damp, not soaking wet hair is best when using a blow dryer brush; for some blow dryer brushes, you can even use it on dry hair to revive your style days after!
Step Two: Apply Heat Protectant:
When styling your hair using any hot tools, you should always apply a heat protectant no matter what hair type you have. Straight hair, curly hair, wavy hair, we need to protect our luscious locks.
Apply some heat protectant to your damp hair and brush it through your strands to help evenly distribute the product before you blow-dry and help ease any tangles.
It creates a seal over the ends of your hair and acts as a shield for your hair. The majority of heat protectants will protect your hair up to 450°F/230°C. They’ll also last up to 4 hours.
It provides a protective barrier on the hair shaft to protect the cuticles from high levels of heat. It is a leave-in conditioner used just before heat styling.
You will typically find that heat protectant is available in a spray, cream, oil, or serum formula. They can also contain ingredients that help tame frizz, condition, protect from humidity and even add shine.
Step Three: Work In Sections:
You’ll next want to work in sections. The best way to use a dryer brush is to section your hair using claw clips and work underneath to the top of your hair.
Part your hair from ear to ear, creating a top and bottom section. Clip the top section out the way and part the bottom of the hair, bringing each side to the front of your shoulders.
Step Four: Wrap Your Hair Around The Brush:
Working in sections, wrap the blow dry hair brush around the section of hair, around 1-2 inches thick, and brush up the length of your hair.
Starting at the roots, you can use the brush to lift the roots and wrap your hair around the brush and pull the brush down your hair– without snagging or pulling.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a slight wave, you can start at the bottom and start wrapping your hair around the barrel until you reach the root.
Hold for 10-20 seconds, then slowly wind the brush downwards and unravel your hair in the process. You should have silky, frizz-free strands with a slight curl at the ends.
This will start to look more like your bouncy blowout.
Step Five Repeat For All Strands:
You can repeat either or both techniques when blow-drying your hair using a blow-dry brush. You can either alternate between the two so you can achieve the ultimate bouncy blowout look.
Or, if you prefer your hair straight, create a lot of tension using the brush but don’t twirl as you go down.
Make sure you try to lift the root using a hot air brush; this will help create volume. So top tip every time you lift the brush, pull the hair upward, so wrap, lift and pull the hair as you go.
Step Six Touch Up:
You’ll then want to use the hot airbrush to touch up your roots or areas on your hair that need a little extra bounce– especially if you have fine hair.
I love the hot air brush because all hair types can benefit from it, especially if there are multiple heat settings so that you can alternate based on your hair type.
Once you’re happy, you can apply a little bit of serum or oil to the ends of your hair to lock in moisture and shine. You can also spray some volume spray to add a little extra bounce.

How To Curl Hair With A Blow Dryer Brush
The bouncy blowout isn’t the only thing that hot air brushes can do; the best are super versatile and can tackle a wide range of hairstyles, such as a sleek straight finish to bouncy curls.
The first thing you’ll want to do is section your hair and rough-dry to remove any excess moisture; it is best to use a blow dryer brush on damp and not wet hair– sectioning will make styling with the brush head much easier.
Hold your brush vertically with the brush handle facing downwards and wrap the hair around your hair, facing away from your face. Use a lot of tension as you go down the hair and twirl as you go down the hair.
Once you reach the ends, hold the curl in your hand until it cools. Alternatively, you can use rollers or pin your curl to your head until you’ve finished your entire head and the curl has cooled completely– this will help them last longer.
Work your way to the back of your head and hold the brush vertically, twisting away from your head; if you want a little extra lift on top, you can hold your brush horizontally for that bouncy finish.
Once your curls have cooled, give your head a little shake and tousle, and it should form the perfect, bouncy and curly blowout. Spray a little hairspray, and then you have beautiful curls!
Different Types Of Hot Air Brushes:
The ultimate face-off, the oval vs. round brush. These are the two common brush types used in hot airbrushes, but which one is best? Let’s chat about the differences.
Oval Dryer Brush: The oval shape of the brush head is designed to boost volume and fullness to your hair, while the rounded edges help keep strands dent-free.
It offers perfect smoothing and volume, making it ideal for fine hair; the rounded edges can help lift the root and boost volume.
Round Dryer Brush: When you go to the salon, you will find that your stylist will most commonly use a round brush to do your blowdry, but why?
Well, round brushes are brilliant for adding volume and even curling your hair for a bouncy blowout. They are super versatile and can even straighten your hair to save you whipping out the flat iron too.
You can even use them on dry hair to revive a blow-dry style.
Paddle Dryer Brush: So if you have thick, long hair 9 times out of 10, you probably have a paddle brush, am I right? Well, a less common blow dryer brush is a paddle brush, and they’re brilliant for smoothing hair.
Paddle brushes have brilliant detangling properties; they can help dry strands without disrupting the hair cuticle, making them the perfect hair tool for a sleek, straight style.
