  • Over 90% Naturally Derived Ingredients

Let’s Talk About The Brand Aveda

I have used more hair brands than I can shake a stick at—some bad, some good, and some products that are now staples in my hair care routine. Aveda has been a top-end brand for years, but what makes Aveda so special, and do you need it?

Aveda has been putting the rest of the market to shame for years, with natural and sustainable hair and skin care products that don’t compromise quality. They use over 90% naturally derived ingredients in all their products, and the results are magic.

Aveda is an industry leader in hair care, skincare, and even beauty education. It has been harnessing the unique power of botanicals since 1978. One of their proudest achievements is that in 1989 Aveda was the first  Ceres Principles for corporate responsibility, which call for the safeguarding of the Earth and “its inhabitants.”

Plus, as of January 1, 2021, Aveda is 100% vegan, which is outstanding for a leading industry brand, setting a standard for other brands to follow. Aveda is also much more sustainable as they use responsible packaging, ingredients, manufacturing, and sourcing. Aveda is one of the few brands that uses 100% renewable wind energy and is sustainable for the environment.

Aveda understands that there is no such thing as one size fits all, so they cater their products for different hair types and needs. For example, they even offer a full curly hair range, the range for damaged, oily, and dry hair types, and much more.

How Aveda Started:

Aveda was first founded by Horst Rechelbacher in 1978. On this trip to India in 1970, he was introduced to the science of Ayurveda (the Hindu traditional holistic system of medicine and surgery from India), and suddenly his vision for his company was born.

Ayurveda rests on the belief that true wellness comes from a delicate balance of mind, body, and spirit. Natural extracts for all three form a holistic approach to self-care. This inspiration is the reason why Aveda was born.

Rechelbacher then went home and with the creation of his first product in the sink, a clove shampoo– AVEDA WAS BORN.

Aveda today is grown and made far away from India in Blaine, Minnesota- Minneapolis, where the Aveda Headquarters lives today. Despite being owned now by Estée Lauder maintains the brand’s focus on unique products infused with Ayurvedic remedies.

Aveda’s mission is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda they “strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty but around the world”

Aveda has been putting over brands to shame for years by the fact that they create products that are high quality, good for the environment, sustainable for our wildlife, naturally derived and most importantly 100% vegan.

Responsibility At Aveda:

Unlike other leading market brands, Aveda takes responsibility and cares for every ingredient in every Aveda product. Their line is sustainable, and they care for the world we live in and the animals it inhabits.

Here are all the ways that the brand Aveda is responsible for the environment and our world.

Responsible Packaging:

First things first, the easiest way that Aveda offers is environmentally responsible packaging. They use co0creating breakthrough solutions with suppliers to reduce dependency on plastic and global plastics pollution.

At Aveda, they “believe there is no responsible alternative to doing business other than through environmental sustainability, and this belief guides every decision we make. We find inspiration in doing so in nature and believe that nature is not merely something to be cherished and protected but also should be emulated as a model of sustainability. We also believe that profit and environmental responsibility will increasingly work together as more industries find out that nature works for both sustainability and the bottom line”.

They are proud to say that they are the first beauty company to be using “100% post-consumer PET,” with more than “85% of skincare and hair styling PET bottles and jars contain 100% post-consumer recycled materials”.

Aveda is mindful of every package they develop; they are mindful of their environmental footprint and work to minimize their packaging and maximize their use of recyclable and post-consumer recycled materials.

Within their sustainable packaging they:

  • -Consider the life cycle analysis when developing packing options
  • – Reduce the size, weight, and production processes of packaging wherever possible
  • – Offer packaging that can be recycled whenever possible
  • – Use the most environmentally sound materials such as post-consumer recycled (PCR) content as commercially possible without affecting the efficacy of the product.
  • – They use renewable energy to manufacture and fill their packaging in Blaine.
  • – They challenge packaging partners to meet this same standard.

Now, this is where you come in; while Aveda cannot guarantee that their packaging will be recycled, they can do their part, ensuring that the material it’s made out of will have a chance of another life instead of going to a landfill.

So if you’re looking to become more sustainable, just be sure to recycle once you’ve finished!

90% of Aveda’s polyethylene (HDPE) plastic bottles use a minimum of 80% PCR, made from milk bottles and two of their new products. To their calculation, this saves them over 600 tonnes of virgin plastic each year.

They also use PETA from recycled soda and water bottles for many of their bottles and jars.

Responsible Manufacturing:

Aveda has not only made their packaging responsible for the environment, but they have also made the manufacturing process sustainable. Through aggressive reductions in waste and water across the Aveda Value Chain, they are always striving towards a more sustainable future.

As I said earlier, Aveda was the first company to manufacture all products with 100% wind power through renewable energy credits and carbon offsets, balancing their electrical and natural gas usage. They also purchase credits and offsets to cover the overwhelming majority of US operations.

They have a new solar array at Aveda headquarters that is expected to provide 50% of manufacturing facilities’ annual demand. Pretty cool, right? Plus, more than 83% of Aveda’s waste is re-used or recycled in their primary manufacturing facility.

Responsible Sourcing

Next up is the responsible sourcing of the ingredients used within Aveda products. All of their ingredients are naturally derived, which they define to be those for which more than 50% of the molecule comes from a plant, mineral, water, or natural source.

The products are also all certified organic, sourced from sustainable or renewable plant-based origins that do not negatively impact ecosystems from which they are sourced. Aveda uses a number of green ingredients in its products as part of its mission.

Since 2000, Aveda has substantially increased its purchases of organic, raw herbal ingredients and organic essential oils from 20-25% of total tonnage to more than 90% for both while increasing our total tonnage significantly.

Aveda has established soil to bottle traceability for certain key ingredients, which allows Aveda to progressively document and expand the source of these ingredients while promoting quality through its supply chain.

Plus, all of Aveda’s essential oils are processed in an environmentally responsible manner through steam distillation.

Clean Beauty:

One of my favorite things about the brand Aveda is that they offer clean beauty. No chemicals are hidden in the fine print; their naturally sourced materials have made a real reputation for the brand and are the reason why there are so many Aveda salons across the globe.

After all, it’s what’s inside that count, which is why Aveda work tirelessly to bring the best products possible.

For starters, Aveda is a cruelty-free brand and has been 100% vegan for the past year. They do not test on animals nor derive any of their ingredients from animals; their products are “people tested.” The company loves its furry friends and strives to look after them.

Being cruelty-free and vegan is an important part of their mission to “care for the world we live in.” They strive to set an example for leadership and responsibility of caring, not just for the world of beauty but around the world.

As of January 1, 2021, Aveda is also 100% vegan, no one-month Veganuary, but instead, a sustainable and permanent solution that sets Aveda apart from its top competitors– this along with the sustainability of the brand and impacts on the environment.

From plant-based hair care to mindfully made body care, their groundbreaking 100% vegan pledge reflects their founding ethos that “our wellbeing is inextricably tied to the planets. Creating 100% vegan products is a small yet powerful step in honoring the Earth.”

Their Blaine Minnesota manufacturing plant is “certified as a wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.” They worked with NWF to create “drive with care” signs that would help protect wildlife on their campus.

Aveda also practices bee-friendly gardening at their headquarters in Baine, MN, and provides honey bee haven with access to pesticide-free food, shelter, and water– save the bees!

Plus, they never use parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, formaldehyde, and its donors, SLES, oxybenzone, benzene, retinyl palmitate, microcrystalline wax, polyethylene beads, triclosan, triclocarban, lanolin, carmine, talc, or synthetic fragrance.

So you’ll never be caught out with harsh chemicals ever again! Their formulas are 90% naturally derived on average.

Social Responsibility:

Finally, Aveda takes social responsibility for their brand; they have been caring for the world since 1978. To date, their guests, artists, employees, and leaders have raised nearly $65M to help fund environmental initiates globally.

Their goal is to increase this number to 75$ by the end of 2022 through their annual Earth Month initiatives. They have partnered with charity water to provide clean water access, sanitation, and hygiene to communities in India, Nepal, Madagascar, and Ethiopia– all countries where they source ingredients.

Other beauty brands are slacking in comparison to Aveda; they are the way of the future.

Aveda’s Best Sellers

So now we’ve spoken about the brand, let’s speak about the hair products that are the best out of the Aveda line. Aveda offers both hair and skin care products, but I’m here to review the best Aveda hair products on their line.

Aveda Botanical Repair:

Aveda’s Botanical Repair range uses bond-building technology like competitors like Olaplex but uses plant-derived ingredients. Botanical Repair is a plant-derived, bond-building treatment formulated for all hair types and textures.

It leaves hair feeling stronger, shinier, and naturally full of life.

Prevention is always better than a cure, so Aveda uses this goal “Strengthen. Prevent. Protect”. These treatments are designed to strengthen and help protect three key layers of damaged hair with plant-derived technologies.

Strengthen- The Cortex: The plant-derived bond-multiplying molecule penetrates to the inner cortex to strengthen damaged hair from within. It bonds with broken or damaged bonds within the hair to visibly and physically strengthen.

Prevent- The Cuticle: The nourishing macro green blend with avocado, green tea, and sacha inchi oils smooth the cuticle to detangle and prevent breakage in damaged hair.

Protect- The F-Layer: The plant-derived complex mimics the hair’s outer f-layer to help protect damaged hair. The F-Layer is the workhorse behind healthy hair; it is the outmost group of water-repelling molecules that encase the hair cuticle.

The F-layer keeps hair soft and fights off damage caused by heat styling or frequent exposure to water. By Aveda mimicking this quality in the hair within their botanical Repair, it means that this range doesn’t just Repair but also protects and prevents damage from occurring again.

Pretty cool, right? Well, within this range, they offer a leave-in treatment, strengthening masque, shampoo, and conditioner. This full range will transform your hair but if you don’t want to invest, then take a trip to an Aveda salon for this treatment.

This range is a whopping 94% naturally derived, sulfate-free, and silicone-free; they don’t call it award-winning for nothing. But want to know how to use the Botanical Repair range, check out the full guide.

Aveda Nutriplenish Collection:

Another best-selling collection from the Aveda brand is the Nutriplenish collection. It is hydration supercharged by superfoods. It is infused with an omega-5-rich superfood-rich blend that replenishes and hydrates for lush, shiny, and hydrated hair.

They offer two main types within this collection, light and deep moisture. The light moisture is perfect for those with loose hair types like type 1a through to 3a, and then the deep moisture is perfect for tight curly and coily hair from 3a to 4c hair types.

Nutriplenish Light Moisture: the Nutriplenish Light Moisture line is a nourishing, fast-absorbing, superfood-infused formulate for hyperhydration and next-level nourishment. It contains lightweight oils to replenish moisture without weighing the hair down.

Each product in the light moisture range contains organic pomegranate oil, mango butter, and coconut oil. Pomegranate oil is an omega-5 rich oil to help hydrate and revitalize dry and depleted hair. The mango butter is a lipid-rich butter to nourish and smooth dry hair, and coconut oil is rich in fatty acids that nourish the hair, revives protein loss, and help with moisture retention.

Nutriplenish Deep Moisture: the Nutriplenish Deep Moisture line is very similar ingredients-wise to the light moisture, but it contains 50% more nourishing butters than the light collection, and it is specially designed for hair that craves a serious moisture boost from a richer formula.

It is better suited for those with curly hair or tighter coarse textures as it is much more moisturizing and heavier than the light moisture range. This range also offers more intense detangling during the shampooing process and offers more softness and manageability.

Coarse hair structures need less washing and more hydrating, so using deep moisture is much better as it keeps hair hydrated for longer plus, it contains leave-ins within the range to keep hair hydrated between washes.

The Nutriplenish range is also sulfate-free and silicone-free, making it safe for all hair types. The range offers a shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, oil, deep or light moisture masque, deep conditioner curl gelee, and daily moisturizing treatment.

This range is my favorite for curly hair, but it is perfect for those who need a moisture kick.

Aveda Thickening Tonic:

Aveda’s Thickening Tonic has changed the game for those with fine hair. It instantly thickens hair by expanding strands from roots to ends. It is powered by botanicals, including certified organic amla fruit. It is one of Aveda’s best sellers.

It instantly thickens the hair for a fuller style, with just one use. It is infused with natural ingredients like amla fruit, corn, and wheat to boost thickening. Plus, it is one of the top naturally derived products from their range, being 97% naturally derived.

Alma is rich in antioxidants and iron. It is an Indian gooseberry that contains high levels of vitamins C to prevent hair loss. It also strengthens the roots, so hair appears thicker and prevents premature hair loss to prevent hair thinning.

Wheat protein is also super lightweight, and its small molecules penetrate the hair shaft. Once they are penetrated through they, pull in water and plump up the strands to make the hair appear fuller and thicker.

Corn also contains formative amino acids like methionine and lysine; it can help renew the texture of tresses.

These ingredients work together to visibly thicken the hair and make it look fuller. All you need to do is spray thoroughly on the roots to ends and comb to distribute evenly, then blow-dry and style, and your hair will look thicker.

There’s no wonder as to why this product is one of their best sellers.
